Dolerite and copper

One of 3 sculptural stone installations developed for the Overland Track, Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Cradle Mountain Lake St Claire National Park. The works were designed as contemplation points, offering walkers another level of engagement with the environment and creating a sense of arrival/departure at each overnight site.

This work, by Windermere Hut, speaks of water – from streams to tarns and lakes – supporting alpine life (sometimes tiny and hidden). If you look carefully you will find an anaspides tasmaniae. Often described as a living fossil, it is a species of fresh water crustacean that lives in tarns and creeks in alpine regions of Tasmania.
